First Aid — While You Wait for Help

Basic guidance for common emergencies. Call 999 first, then follow these steps.

Cardiac Arrest / No Pulse

Call 999. Lay person flat. Push hard and fast on centre of chest (30 compressions), then 2 rescue breaths. Continue until help arrives.

Severe Bleeding

Apply firm, direct pressure with a clean cloth. Do not remove cloth — add more on top. Elevate the injured part above heart level if possible.

Stroke — FAST Test

Face drooping · Arm weakness · Speech difficulty · Time to call 999. Do NOT give food or water. Lay person down, tilt head to side.

Choking (Adult)

Give 5 back blows between shoulder blades, then 5 abdominal thrusts (Heimlich). Alternate until object clears or person loses consciousness.

Burns

Cool burn with cool (not cold) running water for 20 minutes. Do NOT use ice, butter, or toothpaste. Cover loosely with cling film or clean bandage.

Poisoning / Overdose

Call 999 immediately. Do NOT induce vomiting unless directed. Keep person awake and talking. Take note of what was swallowed and how much.
